Your writing stays in this browser and is not sent to a server. Drafts may be removed if browser data is cleared or you use private browsing.
How to Use the Writing Timer
Choose a session length, optionally enter a word goal, and select Start. Write in the text box while the countdown runs. Your word and character counts update as you type, and your average words per minute reflects the active timer session.
What Is a Writing Sprint?
A writing sprint is a focused period of time set aside for drafting. The timer gives you a clear start and finish, helping you concentrate on getting ideas down before you stop to revise.
How Long Should a Writing Sprint Be?
A 5- or 10-minute sprint can help you get started or finish a short exercise. Try 15 or 20 minutes for a focused assignment, and 25 or 30 minutes for a longer drafting session. A 60-minute session works well when you want a longer block of uninterrupted writing.
Writing Timer for Students
Students can use a writing timer to practice timed essays, prepare for in-class writing, or break an assignment into manageable sessions. Set a realistic goal, write continuously, then review your work when the timer ends.
Writing Timer for Authors
Authors and bloggers can use writing sprints to make progress on a draft, article, scene, or outline. A short, repeatable session can make it easier to return to a project regularly.
How to Improve Your Writing Pace
Start with a comfortable session length, reduce distractions, and focus on drafting one idea at a time. Treat the words-per-minute result as a record of that session rather than a target you need to hit. Planning and revision are part of writing, so speed is only one measure of progress.
Writing Timer vs. Typing Speed Test
A typing speed test measures how quickly you reproduce provided text. A writing timer tracks original writing, which also involves thinking, planning, and editing. The words-per-minute figure here is an average writing pace for the active session.
Writing Timer FAQ
What is a writing timer?
A writing timer is a countdown tool that helps you focus on writing for a chosen amount of time. This one also tracks your word count, character count, and average words per minute.
How does a writing sprint work?
Choose a duration and start the timer, then write until the session ends. You can use the timer with the on-page text box or write in another application while the countdown runs.
How long should a writing sprint last?
That depends on your task and attention. Try a 5- or 10-minute session to begin, or choose 15, 20, 25, 30, or 60 minutes for a longer writing block.
Can I use the timer without typing in the text box?
Yes. The countdown works independently of the text box, so you can write in another application. The on-page word count and writing pace will reflect only text entered in this tool.
Does the timer count words automatically?
Yes. When you write or paste text in the box, the Words and Characters results update automatically.
Can I pause the writing timer?
Yes. Select Pause to stop the countdown and Resume to continue. Paused time is not included in the average words-per-minute calculation.
Will my writing disappear when time runs out?
No. The timer can finish while you keep editing. Your writing remains in the text box, and you can copy or download it.
Can I download my writing?
Yes. Select Download TXT to save the text as a plain text file.
Is my writing stored privately?
Your draft is saved in local browser storage on your device. The text is not sent to a server. Clearing browser data or using private browsing may remove the saved draft.
