What Is a Case Converter?
A case converter is an online tool that changes the capitalization of text. Instead of manually retyping words, you can instantly convert your writing to uppercase, lowercase, sentence case, title case, or another capitalization style.
The Case Converter above makes it easy to fix text that was accidentally typed with Caps Lock enabled, standardize capitalization in a document, or format titles and headings. Simply paste your text into the box and select the style you want.
You can also switch between capitalization styles, undo changes, and copy the converted text when you're finished.
How to Convert Text Case
Follow these steps to change the capitalization of your text:
- Type or paste your text into the input box above.
- Select a conversion option, such as UPPERCASE, lowercase, Sentence case, or Title Case.
- Your text will immediately change to the selected capitalization style.
- If necessary, select another style or click Undo to return to the previous version.
- Click Copy to copy your converted text to the clipboard.
The converter also displays the current number of characters and words in your text. For more detailed word statistics, try our Word Counter.
Convert Text to Lowercase
The lowercase option changes uppercase letters into lowercase letters. It is especially useful when text has been written entirely in capital letters or when you need consistent lowercase formatting.
For example, HELLO WORLD becomes hello world.
Lowercase conversion is useful for cleaning copied text, standardizing labels, and fixing accidental capitalization. Numbers, spaces, and punctuation remain unchanged.
Convert Text to Uppercase
The UPPERCASE option converts lowercase letters into capital letters. For example, Hello world becomes HELLO WORLD.
Uppercase text is commonly used for headings, abbreviations, labels, and other situations where capital letters are needed. Rather than retyping everything with Caps Lock enabled, you can convert an entire passage with one click.
Convert Text to Sentence Case
Sentence case capitalizes the beginning of sentences while changing other letters to lowercase.
For example, HELLO WORLD. HOW ARE YOU? becomes Hello world. How are you?
Sentence case is useful for correcting paragraphs written in all capitals, standardizing text, and making sentences easier to read.
Keep in mind that automatic capitalization cannot always determine which words are proper nouns, names, or abbreviations. For example, a name such as London may need to be capitalized manually after conversion.
Convert Text to Title Case
Title Case capitalizes important words while generally leaving shorter connecting words, such as of, and, and the, in lowercase when appropriate.
For example, the lord of the rings becomes The Lord of the Rings.
Title case is commonly used for article titles, book titles, headings, presentations, and other written content.
Capitalization rules can vary among style guides. The converter uses general title capitalization rules rather than attempting to reproduce every editorial style guide.
Capitalize the First Letter of Each Word
The Capitalize Each Word option changes the first letter of every word to uppercase while converting the remaining letters to lowercase.
For example, the lord of the rings becomes The Lord Of The Rings.
Unlike Title Case, this option capitalizes every word, including short words such as of, and, and the.
It can be useful for formatting lists, labels, headings, names, and other text where every word should begin with a capital letter.
Convert Text to Alternating Case
aLtErNaTiNg CaSe changes letters between lowercase and uppercase in an alternating pattern.
For example, hello world can become hElLo WoRlD.
Alternating case is often used for playful writing, stylized messages, and informal online communication.
Convert Text to Inverse Case
InVeRsE CaSe reverses the capitalization of each letter. Uppercase letters become lowercase, while lowercase letters become uppercase.
For example, Hello World becomes hELLO wORLD.
Unlike the other conversion options, inverse case responds to the existing capitalization of each letter rather than applying a uniform style to the entire passage.
Title Case vs. Sentence Case
Title case and sentence case are both common capitalization styles, but they follow different rules.
Title Case capitalizes the important words in a title. For example, How to Write a Better Essay.
Sentence case generally capitalizes the first word of a sentence, along with proper nouns when recognized. For example, How to write a better essay.
Title case is often used for headings and titles, while sentence case is commonly used for paragraphs, ordinary sentences, and headings written in a sentence-style format.
Does Changing Case Affect Character Count?
For ordinary English text, changing between uppercase and lowercase does not normally affect the number of characters.
For example, Hello and HELLO both contain five characters. However, certain Unicode letters can change length when converted between uppercase and lowercase, so the character count may occasionally change.
The character and word counts above update as your text changes. For a more detailed analysis, you can use our Character Counter or Letter Counter.
