How to Count Syllables

What Is a Syllable?
A syllable is a unit of spoken sound that usually contains one vowel sound. Words can contain one syllable or several syllables depending on how they are pronounced.
For example, cat has one syllable, counter has two syllables, and beautiful has three syllables.
Syllables per Word Counter
You can use this tool as a syllables per word counter to see the estimated number of syllables in every word you enter. Each word in the breakdown is immediately followed by its syllable count.
For example, counter appears as counter(2), while beautiful appears as beautiful(3).
This makes it easy to see which words contribute to the total syllable count without having to check each word separately.
Syllables per Line Counter
The Syllable Counter also works as a syllables per line counter. Each non-blank line you enter appears as a separate row in the breakdown, with the total syllable count displayed in the Syllables per Line column.
This is especially useful for poetry, haiku, tanka, song lyrics, verse, and other writing where the number of syllables in each line matters.
The Lines statistic counts lines that contain text. Blank lines used for spacing or separating stanzas are not included in the Lines total.
Blank lines are hidden from the breakdown by default. Select Show blank lines if you want to display them as zero-syllable rows. When blank lines are hidden, the number beside the option shows how many blank lines are not currently displayed.
A line that simply wraps on the screen because it is long does not create an additional line count. Only an actual new line containing text counts as another line.
Average Syllables per Line
Average Syllables per Line shows the average number of syllables across the non-blank lines in your text.
Blank lines are not included because they are treated as spacing or stanza separators rather than lines of text.
This metric can be especially useful when comparing lines of poetry, lyrics, verse, or other line-structured writing.

How Does the Syllable Counter Work?
The Syllable Counter analyzes each word and estimates how many syllables it contains based on English spelling and pronunciation patterns.
English syllable counting is more complicated than simply counting vowels. Silent vowels, vowel pairs, word endings, and unusual pronunciations can all affect the number of syllables in a word.
Because English contains many exceptions, automated syllable counters provide an estimate. Pronunciation differences can occasionally produce a different syllable count.
One-Syllable Words
One-syllable words contain a single spoken beat. Examples include cat, dog, book, house, and strength.
A word can contain several written vowels and still have only one syllable. For example, house contains three vowel letters but is normally pronounced as one syllable.
Two-Syllable Words
Two-syllable words contain two spoken beats. Examples include counter, table, happy, and river.
Words With Three or More Syllables
Longer words often contain three or more syllables. Examples include banana, beautiful, computer, and education.

Average Syllables per Word
Average Syllables per Word shows the average number of syllables contained in the words in your text.
For example, if a passage contains 20 syllables across 10 words, the average is 2 syllables per word.
This statistic can be useful when comparing the complexity of different passages or looking at typical word length by pronunciation.
Is the Number of Syllables the Same as the Number of Vowels?
No. Counting vowel letters is not a reliable way to count syllables.
Some vowel combinations create a single sound, while some words contain silent vowels. Other words can contain adjacent vowels that are pronounced as separate syllables.
For example, team contains two vowel letters but only one syllable.
Counting Syllables in Poetry
Syllable counts are especially useful when writing poetry because many poetic forms use a specific number of syllables in each line.
The line-by-line breakdown above lets you see the syllable total for each line while also showing the estimated count for every individual word.
Blank rows used to separate stanzas are not counted as poem lines. This means a poem with 16 lines of verse still shows 16 Lines even if blank spacing is used between its stanzas.
Haiku is one well-known example. English-language haiku are commonly written using a 5-7-5 syllable pattern across three lines.

Why Can Syllable Counts Differ?
Some English words can be pronounced differently depending on accent, dialect, context, or speaking style. That means a word may occasionally be heard as having a different number of syllables.
Words such as hour, fire, and family may be pronounced differently by different speakers.
Poetry and song lyrics may also stretch or compress pronunciation to fit a particular rhythm.

There is no fixed number of syllables in a sentence. A short sentence may contain only a few syllables, while a longer sentence can contain dozens.
