How to use our URL Length Checker

To get started with the URL length checker, enter your URL in the text-box.

The URL length will then update instantly in real-time on the top of your screen.

Next to the URL length is the SLD length and domain name length.

Below that is a table of all the specific parts of a URL. We will discuss that next.

Different parts of a URL

Protocol or Scheme - The protocol is the beginning of the URL. So in https://example.com/ the protocol would be "https://". Other examples of protocols include "http://", "fttp://" and "mailto://".

Sub-Domain - A subdomain is the prefix that is in some cases added before the SLD. For example, in the URL https://store.example.com the sub-domain would be "store".

SLD - This is the actual "name" part of the URL. So in the URL https://store.example.com the SLD would be "example".

TLD - This is the domain name extension, the part that goes at the end after the dot. In https://store.example.com the TLD would be ".com".

Domain name - The domain name is a combination of the SLD and the TLD. For example, in the URL https://example.com/ the domain name would be example.com.

Port - The port goes at the end of the domain. It is uncommon to display the port in the URL unless it is a port other than the default. In the URL https://example.com:8080 the port would be ":8080".

Path - The path contains the actual page of the website. So in the example URL, https://example.com/blog-post the path would be "blog-post".

Query String - If a query string is in a URL it would be the part following the question mark. In the example https://www.example.com/search?item=laptop&brand=Dell&color=black the query string would be "?item=laptop&brand=Dell&color=black".

Fragment - This is the part of the URL following the "#" symbol. Some webpages, after scrolling all the way to the bottom will have a "go to top" link that will move you up the webpage.

Or some will have a table of contents where you can click a section and it will take you to that section in the webpage. In the URL https://www.example.com/about-us#top the fragment would be "#top".

Here is an example of a link that takes you to the top, notice how the "#top" gets appended to the URL.

Move to Top

Origin - The origin is a combination of the protocol, domain name and port. In the URL "https://www.example.com:443/" the origin would be the whole thing "https://www.example.com:443/"

Our URL length checker above not only checks your URL length, but all of these different parts of the URL.

Tips for choosing a domain name

Keywords - Consider adding keywords to your domain name as it can benefit your SEO. You can use keyword research tools to find out which keywords receive the most search traffic. For example if you own a tennis club in Chicago you could use the domain name chicagotennisclub.com.

Or consider if you want a more brand focused domain name, after all Nike is not "athleticapparel.com" its "nike.com". Decide whether you want a branded name or keyword name.

Domain name extension - The most popular domain name extension also known as a TLD is ".com" and if available would be a good one to use. A ".com" extension can appear more authoritative compared to an extension that no one has ever heard of.

Other common extensions include ".net", ".info", ".biz", ".co" and ".io". Also, ".org" is a good choice if you have a non-profit organization. Of course there are also country specific domain name extensions (".uk" for the UK, ".ca" for Canada etc.) that would be a good choice if you want to target a certain country.

Domain name length - Shorter domain names are more sought after than longer domain names since they are easier to remember and type it in the address bar. The maximum length of a domain (TLD) is 63 characters, however it is recommended to keep it 15 characters or under ( there are exceptions of course). This is where our URL length checker comes in handy, be sure to check your name length with our URL length checker above.

Avoid certain characters like hyphens - A domain name that only has letters will be easier to understand, remember and will look more professional. Instead of "chicago-tennis-club.com" opt for "chicagotennisclub.com". A common mistake is to use numbers instead of letters. For example, "ch1cag0-t3nn1s-club.com". Terrible right?

Instead of adding numbers or symbols you could consider adding a word like "the" to it. Although a bit long (20 characters), "thechicagotennisclub.com" wouldn’t be bad.

Reflect your brand - Choose a name that you want to be associated with your brand. Is your brand more formal or casual? Does your brand have a mascot? Consider choosing a name that is memorable and is reflective of your brand's values..

Domain names with social media usernames available - There is nothing worse than having different names for all your social media usernames and a different name for your website. However, if you have the same name across all platforms it will make it easier for people to find you. Check the availability of social media usernames before you buy your domain name.

Check if it has been trademarked - Before picking a domain name do a trademark search to see if the name is already taken. Also, do a web search and check similar domain names.

Buy the domain name quickly - If you wait too long someone else can grab it, especially if it is a sought after domain name. Remember, anyone in the world can buy a domain name, the exception being certain domains with certain domain name extensions like ".gov", ".edu" etc.

Consider buying similar domain names - If you buy a domain name, it is possible someone else can buy the same name but with a different domain name extension like ".net" or ".co". Or they can buy a domain name with a slight variation, for example with a "the" in front of the name. You might want to buy up additional domain extensions and variations before your competitor does!
