How to Generate a Word Cloud
A word cloud is a visual representation of text that displays words in different sizes. Words that appear more frequently are generally shown larger, making it easier to identify important or repeated terms. With our free Word Cloud Generator, you can create a customized word cloud directly in your browser.
- Enter your text. Type or paste text into the input box, or upload a TXT file.
- Generate your word cloud. Click Generate Word Cloud to turn your text into a visual arrangement of words.
- Customize the design. Choose a shape, color palette, font, word orientation, and other settings.
- Refine the results. Remove common words, exclude individual words, or shuffle the arrangement.
- Download your image. Save your finished word cloud as a PNG or SVG image, or copy it to your clipboard.
What Is a Word Cloud?
A word cloud, sometimes called a tag cloud or text cloud, is a collection of words arranged visually to highlight patterns in text. The size of each word typically represents its frequency or an assigned importance value.
For example, if the word "writing" appears 20 times in a passage while "editing" appears five times, "writing" would normally appear larger in the resulting word cloud. This makes frequently used words easier to recognize at a glance.
Word clouds are commonly used for presentations, classroom activities, survey responses, writing analysis, brainstorming, and visual summaries. They can also provide a quick way to explore which terms appear most often in a document.
Customize Your Word Cloud
A word cloud can be customized to suit different projects and visual styles. Our generator provides options for changing the appearance and content of your cloud.
Word Cloud Shapes
Choose from rectangle, circle, heart, star, diamond, and cloud shapes. Different shapes can make a word cloud more suitable for a particular topic, presentation, or project. A rectangle is a versatile choice for general text analysis, while decorative shapes are useful for more creative designs.
Colors and Fonts
Select a color palette to change the appearance of the words. You can also choose from several fonts and adjust the background color. A simple palette with a readable font works well for reports, while brighter colors can be useful for classroom activities and creative projects.
Word Orientation and Size
Word orientation controls whether words appear horizontally, vertically, or in a mixture of both directions. The word size variation setting adjusts how strongly word frequencies affect their relative sizes. Higher-frequency words remain emphasized, but the overall visual contrast can be adjusted.
Create a Word Cloud from Word Frequencies
You can generate a word cloud from an existing list of words and their frequencies without entering a full paragraph or document. Select Words and Frequencies above the input box, then enter one word or phrase per line, followed by its count.
For example, you could enter "creativity, 20", "writing, 15", and "design, 10" on separate lines. The generator uses these values to determine the relative importance of each entry in the cloud.
If you want to examine word counts before creating a visualization, use our Word Frequency Counter. It identifies repeated words and shows how often each one appears.
Why Remove Common Words from a Word Cloud?
Common words such as "the", "and", "of", and "to" frequently occur in English text. Without filtering, these words can dominate a word cloud even when they are not particularly informative.
The Ignore common words option removes common English words from the visualization so that more meaningful vocabulary stands out. This option is enabled by default, but you can turn it off whenever you want to include all detected words.
You can also exclude specific words using the Exclude Words field. This is useful when a person's name, company name, or frequently repeated term is not relevant to the visualization you want to create.
Understanding Word Frequency in a Word Cloud
Word clouds summarize frequency visually. Larger words generally represent higher counts, while smaller words represent lower counts. The displayed word sizes are intended to communicate relative frequency rather than exact numerical values.
For exact counts, consult the Word Frequency table beneath the generator. You can also download the results as a CSV file.
Our Unique Word Counter can help you identify how many different words appear in a passage. If you want to investigate repeated groups of words rather than individual words, use the Phrase Frequency Counter.
What Can You Use a Word Cloud For?
Word clouds are useful whenever you want a quick visual overview of repeated terms. Some common applications include:
- Classroom activities: Visualize vocabulary, reading assignments, or student responses.
- Presentations: Highlight recurring themes from a topic or discussion.
- Survey analysis: Explore words that appear frequently in open-ended feedback.
- Writing analysis: Identify repeated vocabulary in essays, articles, and reports.
- Brainstorming: Turn a collection of ideas into a visual representation.
- Design projects: Create decorative word arrangements for posters, worksheets, and graphics.
Word clouds are helpful for spotting patterns, but they should not replace reading the original text. Frequency alone cannot determine a word's meaning, context, or importance.
Download Your Word Cloud as PNG or SVG
After generating your cloud, you can download it in two image formats.
- PNG: A widely supported image format suitable for presentations, documents, websites, and sharing online. Choose a higher resolution when you need a larger image.
- SVG: A vector image format that can be resized without the pixelation associated with raster images. SVG files can also be opened in compatible vector design software. Font availability may affect how text is displayed on another device.
You can also use Copy Image to copy your word cloud into compatible applications. Transparent backgrounds are useful when placing the cloud over another image or colored background.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this word cloud generator free?
Yes. You can create, customize, and download word clouds for free without creating an account.
Can I create a word cloud from a paragraph?
Yes. Paste a paragraph, article, essay, or other text into the input box. The generator counts repeated words and uses their frequencies to create the cloud.
Can I use my own words and frequencies?
Yes. Select Words and Frequencies, then enter a word or phrase and its corresponding number on each line. This gives you control over which words appear and their relative sizes.
Why are some words missing from my word cloud?
Words may be excluded because of the common-word filter, the minimum word length setting, or the maximum number of words selected. Some words may also be unable to fit in the chosen shape. Try another shape, reduce the maximum word count, or adjust the settings.
Can I make a heart-shaped word cloud?
Yes. Choose Heart from the Shape menu. You can also select other shapes, including circle, star, diamond, and cloud.
Can I make a word cloud with a transparent background?
Yes. Select Transparent from the Background menu before downloading your image. PNG and SVG support transparency.
What is the difference between a word cloud and a frequency list?
A word cloud represents word frequency visually through word sizes. A frequency list displays the exact number of occurrences for each word. Both can be useful, but a frequency list is more appropriate when precise counts are important.
Does the generator support accented letters?
The generator is designed to recognize Unicode text, including accented letters. Word segmentation can vary by language, especially for writing systems that do not use spaces between words. Available fonts also affect how characters are displayed.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
Word cloud generation and text analysis run locally in your browser. Your text does not need to be uploaded to a server to create a word cloud.
