How to Use the Specific Character Counter
Enter the character you want to count in the Target Character box, then type or paste your text into the Your Text box. The Specific Character Counter updates automatically as you type.
The Occurrences result shows how many times your target character appears. The tool also displays the total number of characters in your text and the percentage represented by the character you selected.
Every matching character is also highlighted in the Highlighted Matches section so you can quickly see exactly where it appears.
Count How Many Times a Character Appears
A specific character counter is useful when you know exactly which letter, number, symbol, punctuation mark, or other character you want to find.
Instead of scanning your text manually, enter the target character and the counter will immediately show how many times it occurs.

What Counts as a Character?
A character can be a letter, number, punctuation mark, symbol, or other visible character. The tool is designed to accept a single displayed character as the target.
This means you can search for characters such as a, A, 7, ?, $, é, or other Unicode characters.
Case-Sensitive Character Counting
By default, letter matching ignores capitalization. For example, searching for a can also count A.
Turn on Match case if uppercase and lowercase letters should be counted separately.
With Match case enabled, searching for A will count uppercase A but not lowercase a.
Character Percentage
The target character percentage shows what percentage of all characters in your text are the selected character.
For example, if your text contains 1,000 characters and the target character appears 50 times, that character represents 5% of the total.
This can provide useful context when comparing the frequency of a character across texts of different lengths.
Highlighting Character Occurrences
The Highlighted Matches section displays your text with every detected occurrence of the target character highlighted.
This makes it easy to see where the character appears instead of relying only on the total occurrence count.

Can I Count Punctuation and Symbols?
Yes. The target character does not have to be a letter or number. You can search for punctuation marks and symbols such as ., ,, !, ?, #, or $.
The counter will highlight and count each matching occurrence in your text.
Can I Count Emoji and Unicode Characters?
The counter is designed to work with Unicode text, including characters outside the basic English alphabet.
This can include accented letters, non-Latin characters, and many emoji. Some emoji are composed of multiple Unicode components but appear visually as one character, so the tool treats the target as a displayed character where supported by the browser.
Counting Characters in Large Documents
You can paste large amounts of text into the Specific Character Counter and the results will update automatically.
