0 Dots & Dashes

Morse Code Audio

Listen to your Morse code message or download it as an audio file.

Farnsworth spacing adds longer pauses between letters and words while keeping individual signals at the selected character speed. It applies when the effective speed is lower than the character speed.

Morse Code Light Signal

Watch your Morse code message as flashes of light.

The light signal only starts when you click the button. Visual playback uses a slower, limited flash rate for accessibility. Avoid this feature if you are sensitive to flashing lights.

Morse Code Alphabet

The International Morse code alphabet uses dots and dashes to represent letters. Click a character below to add it to the Text box.

Morse Code Numbers (0–9)

Each digit has its own five-signal Morse code pattern.

Morse Code Punctuation

International Morse code also supports common punctuation marks.

Character Name Morse Code
. Period .-.-.-
, Comma --..--
? Question Mark ..--..
' Apostrophe .----.
/ Slash -..-.
( Open Parenthesis -.--.
) Close Parenthesis -.--.-
: Colon ---...
- Hyphen -....-
" Quotation Mark .-..-.
= Equals / Double Hyphen -...-
+ Plus Sign .-.-.
@ At Sign .--.-.
É Accented E ..-..

The mappings above follow International Morse code. In translated output, a standalone / separates words. The actual slash character is encoded as -..-..

More Morse Code Symbols

Some symbols below use common extensions beyond the core International Morse code character list.

Character Name Morse Code
! Exclamation Mark -.-.--
; Semicolon -.-.-.
& Ampersand .-...
_ Underscore ..--.-
$ Dollar Sign ...-..-

Common Morse Code Signals

Signal Morse Code Meaning
SOS ... --- ... Distress Signal
CQ -.-. --.- General Call
73 --... ...-- Best Regards
88 ---.. ---.. Love and Kisses

These are common radio communication examples. SOS is traditionally sent as one continuous distress signal, without the usual gaps between its three letters.

How to Use the Morse Code Translator

Our free Morse Code Translator converts ordinary text into Morse code and Morse code back into readable English. Both directions work automatically, so there is no need to select a conversion mode.

Type or paste a message into the Text box to generate its Morse code equivalent. To decode a message, enter dots and dashes into the Morse Code box. The translated text appears immediately in the other box.

You can copy either result, download it as a TXT file, or use the audio controls to hear your Morse code. The translator runs directly in your browser without requiring an account.

How to Translate Text to Morse Code

Morse code represents letters, numbers, and punctuation using combinations of short signals called dots and longer signals called dashes. Each supported character has a corresponding sequence.

For example, the word HELLO converts into the following Morse code:

Text
HELLO
Morse Code
.... . .-.. .-.. ---

The letter H is represented by four dots, E by one dot, L by a dot-dash-dot-dot sequence, and O by three dashes.

Spaces separate Morse code letters. A forward slash separates words in this translator's readable text format.

How to Translate Morse Code to English

To translate Morse code into English, type or paste a sequence of dots and dashes into the Morse Code box. The translator identifies each Morse code character and converts it into a corresponding letter, number, or punctuation mark.

For example, the following Morse code translates to HELLO WORLD:

Morse Code
.... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..
English
HELLO WORLD

The translator accepts standard dots and dashes, as well as common visual equivalents such as the middle dot (·) and Unicode minus sign (−). Letters should be separated by spaces.

How to Listen to Morse Code

Morse code can be transmitted using sound as well as written dots and dashes. In an audio transmission, a dot is a short tone and a dash is a longer tone.

To hear your message, enter text or Morse code above and click Play. Click Stop to end playback at any time.

Adjust the speed in words per minute (WPM) to make the message play faster or slower. You can also change the tone frequency or download the message as a WAV audio file.

Morse Code Speed and Timing

International Morse code uses specific timing relationships to distinguish dots, dashes, letters, and words.

Signal Duration
Dot 1 time unit
Dash 3 time units
Gap between elements of one letter 1 time unit
Gap between letters 3 time units
Gap between words 7 time units

Morse code speed is commonly measured using the standard word PARIS, which contains 50 timing units when the trailing word gap is included. For example, at 20 WPM, one dot lasts approximately 60 milliseconds.

For beginners, slower speeds can make it easier to distinguish the signals. Farnsworth spacing provides another learning option by increasing the pauses between letters and words while preserving faster individual character timing.

What Is Morse Code?

Morse code is a communication system that represents text using sequences of short and long signals. It developed during the nineteenth century for electrical telegraph communication and later became important in radio communication.

Morse code can be transmitted through sound, electrical pulses, light signals, and other methods. The patterns can also be written using dots and dashes.

International Morse code is standardized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). It includes mappings for letters, numbers, and selected punctuation marks.

Although Morse code is no longer the main method of long-distance communication, it remains useful in amateur radio, signaling, education, and recreational activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I translate Morse code to English?

Enter your dots and dashes into the Morse Code box. Separate letters with spaces and words with a forward slash. The corresponding English text appears automatically.

What is SOS in Morse code?

SOS is represented by three dots, three dashes, and three dots: ... --- .... It is an internationally recognized distress signal. In actual signaling, the SOS distress sequence is sent as a continuous nine-element pattern.

Can I translate Morse code with sound?

Yes. Enter your message and click Play to hear the Morse code. You can adjust the playback speed and audio frequency, then download the result as a WAV file.

What does a slash mean in Morse code?

In written Morse code translators, a standalone slash is commonly used to separate words. For example, .... .. / - .... . .-. . represents HI THERE.

The actual slash punctuation mark has its own Morse code sequence: -..-..

What is the difference between a dot and a dash?

A dot is the shortest standard Morse code signal. A dash lasts three times as long as a dot. The spacing between signals also carries meaning.

Can Morse code include numbers?

Yes. International Morse code supports the digits 0 through 9. Each number has a five-element sequence of dots and dashes. For example, the number 1 is .---- and the number 0 is -----.

Can Morse code translate emojis?

Standard International Morse code does not contain individual codes for emojis. If your message contains an unsupported character, the translator displays a warning instead of silently removing it.

For more information about unusual characters and symbols, use our Character Identifier or Unicode Detector.

Is this Morse Code Translator free?

Yes. The Morse Code Translator is free to use. You can translate messages, listen to Morse code, and download supported results without registering or paying.
